Origins and the Attack

The sentence originates from an incident in Hagrid's very first lesson as Care of Magical Creatures teacher. Hagrid introduces the class to Buckbeak, a proud Hippogriff, and instructs the students on the proper etiquette: one must bow and wait for the creature to bow back before approaching. Harry successfully earns Buckbeak's trust and even rides him. Draco Malfoy, however, deliberately insults the creature, calling it "a great ugly brute." Buckbeak immediately attacks, slashing Malfoy's arm with his talons. Malfoy, though quickly healed by Madam Pomfrey, feigns a lasting injury, milking the incident for all it is worth. Lucius Malfoy, Draco's father, files an official complaint, and the matter is taken to the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures.

The Official Verdict

Hagrid receives an official letter informing him that the Committee has accepted Professor Dumbledore's assurances that Hagrid bears no responsibility, but has decided to uphold Lucius Malfoy's complaint. The hearing is scheduled for April 20th, and in the meantime, Buckbeak must be kept tethered and isolated. The letter is signed by the school governors. Hagrid is devastated, knowing that the Committee is "all in Lucius Malfoy's pocket." The executioner, Walden Macnair, is an old friend of Malfoy's. The Execution Attempt
